Utopian architectures are a paradox. By definition, utopia means no place and to build a no place is inherently incoherent. Combining cement–a common construction material–and salt–a material vital for the development of civilization–Ephemeral Concrete presents the paradox between the static character of architecture and the changing, fragile and volatile nature of utopian ideals. Salt is used as aggregate in this series of cement building blocks to highlight the ways in which organic, wild elements can become stagnant and invisible. Architecture is tangible, utopia is not. When we attempt to immortalize ideals we are left with skeletons of values that no longer stand, incoherent building blocks for the future.
