Time of Accumulation is a table that celebrates the Gong-po system, a time- and labor-intensive process that requires great concentration and patience, two qualities that are often sidelined in our modern lives. At its root, Gong-po is a wood joining technique adopted from traditional Korean architecture that relies solely on the friction between components to provide structural integrity. When viewed through the lens of our contemporary context which places great value on efficiency and convenience, this method of joinery seems frivolous and antiquated. In employing Gong-po, Time of Accumulation provides a powerful opportunity to draw attention to–and meditate upon–process as opposed to outcome; centering work, labor and time in the construction of a domestic object.
